What Auto Repair Can Teach Pharma About Solving Problems

Every profession has its own language, but the best problem-solving principles are often universal.

Dave from Dave's Auto Center teaches a simple framework for diagnosing and repairing vehicles known as the 4Cs:

  • Condition
  • Cause
  • Correction
  • Confirm

While developed for automotive repair, the discipline translates remarkably well to pharmaceutical manufacturing and life sciences.

Condition

Every problem begins with an observable condition.

A vehicle won't start.
A transmission slips.
The engine overheats.

In our industry, the condition may look different:

  • Batch release times continue to increase.
  • Deviations are trending upward.
  • Production schedules are consistently missed.
  • Investigations remain open for weeks.

The mistake many organizations make is trying to solve the problem before fully understanding the condition.

Describe what is happening before deciding why it is happening.

Cause

Once the condition is understood, the next question is obvious:

Why?

Not the convenient answer.
Not the first answer.

The actual cause.

Too often we hear explanations such as:

"The operators need more training."

Perhaps.

Or perhaps the process is confusing.
Perhaps ownership is unclear.
Perhaps the workflow encourages failure.

Symptoms tell us where the problem appeared. They rarely explain why it exists.

Correction

Only after understanding the cause should a correction be implemented.

Real corrections address the system that produced the problem—not simply the symptom that exposed it.

Replacing a form, updating an SOP, or conducting additional training may be appropriate.

Or they may simply make everyone feel like progress was made.

Confirm

This is the step that is most often overlooked.

How do we know the correction actually worked?

Not because the CAPA was closed.

Not because the procedure was revised.

Because the original condition no longer exists.

Performance improved.
The issue stopped recurring.
The process remained stable under normal operating conditions.

Until that happens, the work isn't finished.
